Colorado 2023 – Boulder

August 16, 2023 By //  by Harold Johnson 2 Comments

We were very fortunate, that right before we left for this trip, I received my new and improved adventure chair from Hoyt Racing Chairs (https://www.hoytrunningchairs.com/. This chair allowed me to enjoy Colorado to the fullest. It gave me the chance to bike ride along Boulder Creek as well as go “hiking” over semi accessible trails! It takes a little more effort to pack, but if you did not know already, any luggage you need related to medical or mobility (like an adventure chair) can be checked for free at the airline (note it is also advised to have it labeled with the handicapped symbol).

Mobility devices fly for FREE!!!!
Always exciting to take off!! UNITED crew was fantastic helping us get seated!

I plan to do an entire post on “How to Rent an Accessible Vehicle” when you travel. So depending on your needs, etc…there is definitely some planning that has to go into the process. For us, we have done it so many times, we are used to it. There are 3 main vendors we rely on and are listed below:

1.) Mobility Works https://www.mobilityworks.com/

2.) Wheelers https://wheelersvanrentals.com/

3.) United Access unitedaccess.com

For this trip, we used United Access, and for all of these vendors, for a fee, they will deliver the van to the airport, and park it in a very accessible location relative to the airline you arrive on (e.g. the closest to your Baggage Terminal). We had no issues finding and getting on our way to our Boulder Airbnb with this accessible Grand Caravan!

Pearl Street Mall

Downtown Boulder, and specifically the Pearl Street Mall was definitely a highlight for several reasons. One, it is shut off to traffic, so for a wheelchair user it is very convenient. Second, the food and restaurant choices were top notch, but of course Gelato was one of our first stops!! Check out Gelato Boys https://gelatoboy.com/ when in Boulder for sure!!!!

Pearl Street Mall is wide open and easy to roll around and explore good food (and ice cream!)

Chautauqua Park…A MUST SEE!!

Boulder’s Flatiron area is AMAZING. We went to Chautauqua Park and they have semi-accessible hiking/walking paths. Very very beautiful. Check it out here. https://bouldercolorado.gov/locations/chautauqua-park

FUN FUN FUN Biking in Boulder….

We rented an eBike for Steve and Susan, and I was able to go for a long bike ride along the Boulder Creek Multipurpose Path. See the video below.

El Dorado Canyon State Park …Another MUST SEE

El Dorado Canyon State Park https://cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/parks/EldoradoCanyon is an amazing example of the geological wonders of Colorado. Fowler Trail is an approximately one mile handicapped accessible trail that is definitely worth doing. The views are spectacular!
